4-Player Pinball Machine
The all-new Stern Pinball, Inc. Indiana Jones pinball machine became available in concert with the release of the new movie by George Lucas, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which debuted worldwide on May 22, 2008.
Pinball News, in a report by Alessio Crisantemi, talked to Gary Stern (owner of Stern Pinball, Inc.) about the game. Mr. Stern is quoted as saying that the Indiana Jones pinball machine “is a tribute to the saga of Indiana Jones and it holds in one game all four successful movies dedicated to the George Lucas' character. In fact on the playfield there is an area dedicated to each of the four episodes.” These match the four movies:
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981);
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984);
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989); and
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).
"On the playfield there are a lot of typical elements that recall famous scenes from the Indiana Jones movies, such as the Holy Grail that characterized The Last Crusade, or a part of the Temple of Doom, and also Raiders of the Lost Ark. The multiball that is linked to this last episode is a very intense moment of the game."
The game includes the well-known scene from the first movie where Indiana Jones faces an able warrior with a scimitar, whom he easily dispatches with a casual shot from his revolver. The pinball game player must do the same thing: he must shoot the pinball at just the right moment to advance in the game.
"Another characteristic of the new pinball" Stern continues "is the bonus linked to the Temple of Doom that can be activated by a mechanism in the central part of the playfield.” The Indiana Jones pinball machine player must shoot for a section of the playfield that is alternately rising and lowering, timing the shot perfectly.
The beautiful backglass artwork of the pinball machine depicts scenes from all four Indiana Jones movies. The amazing soundtrack of the game is derived from the recording by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, just as in the movies.
The play rules for the Indiana Jones pinball machine include:
Plunge the pinball to collect the lit "Skill Shot" feature.
Shoot the "Ark" to start "Raiders Multiball". In Raiders Multiball, collect Jackpots and return to the Ark to complete movie scenes.
Collect "Sankara Stones" to start "Temple of Doom Multiball" (Hint: Keep hitting the lower Captive Balls until it opens, then shoot the ball into the hole.)
Shoot the "Crystal Skull Ramp" to collect "Crystal Skull Movie Awards (including Extra Ball!).
Shoot the "Holy Grail (Cup) Scoop" to start the "Last Crusade Mode". Shoot flashing shots to collect.
Shoot the "Holy Grail Scoop" when lit to collect the "Mystery" feature.
Shoot upper Captive Balls in the Map Room to start the Cairo Swordsman Hurry-Up. Shoot again to collect.
Spell out I-N-D-Y or J-O-N-E-S to relight Targets for "Indy Jones" Scoring.
"A very special game!" affirmed Mr. Stern.
